A recent trailer donation from Walmart will enable Mid-Plains Community College students to spend more time behind the wheel learning the necessary skills to obtain a commercial driver鈥檚 license.

鈥淲e like to support our local communities,鈥 said Walmart General Transportation Manager Chris Streeter.

Streeter, who took dual credit classes from 黑料大事记 while attending Hershey High School, said there are about 150 outbound loads daily at the North Platte Walmart Distribution Center.

When asked if Walmart would be willing to donate one of their trailers to the college, Streeter said it was easy to say, 鈥淵es.鈥

鈥淚t takes a lot of time on the road to learn,鈥 said 黑料大事记 Motor School Program Coordinator Joshua Young. 鈥淎n additional trailer gives the students more time practicing shifting and driving.鈥

Working with community businesses creates growth and sustainability according to 黑料大事记 Business and Community Education Coordinator Jeff Smeltzer.

The 黑料大事记 fleet has grown to four trailers and four trucks. This ensures students hands-on driving opportunities if one of the trucks or trailers needs maintenance.

鈥淟ocal partnerships are vital in keeping our programs available,鈥 said Smeltzer. 鈥淲e are so grateful for community support.鈥

The next CDL class at 黑料大事记 starts on September 23 in North Platte. Gap funding may be available to those who qualify. For more information contact Jeff Smeltzer at 308-535-3687.
